Alliance to promote wines of Ontario

The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) in partnership with the Wine Council of Ontario has launched the largest promotional campaign ever for Ontarian wines. While net sales of imported wines have only grown by 2% over the last 5 months, those of Ontarian wines with the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) appellation have increased by more than 12%.(Source: Newswire.ca)

Burgundy sales grow in Norway

Amongst the 56.4 million litres of wine sold in Norway in 2007, an increase of 3.2%, 1.29 million litres or 1.7 million bottles were from Burgundy, a rise of 19%.

In France, the “Loire Bubbles” go beyond the 300,000 hectolitre mark

With growth of more than 9% in 2007 - 2008, the  “Loire Bubbles” AOCs demonstrated that the market remains firm, exceeding for the first time the  threshold of 300,000 hectolitres delivered. The largest increase came from Crémant de Loire, which leapt 22% to more than 89,500 hectolitres, closely following Saumur, which sold 93,000 hectolitres, an increase of 5%. Vouvray stabilised at around 76,800 hectolitres. (Source: VSB)

Areas of Chilean vines hit by parasite

An epidemic of eudemis, better known as grape worm, has broken out in the Santiago, Maule and Valparaíso wine producing areas. As well as making winemaking difficult because of mould, the larval form of this moth harms fruit quality.

The Mendoza region in Argentina on the Chilean border, concerned by possible contagion of its own vines, has declared a state of alert. (Source: VSB – Vinexpo)

Pineau from Charentes struggling in France

Because of stronger demand for Cognac in world markets, Charente distillers have produced more of the spirit and less Pineau, namely only 83,636 hectolitres, which is 10.3% less than last year, with sales of 2.1% fewer bottles overall. The foreign markets for Pineau remain stable, showing a slight increase of 1.7% with loyal drinkers in Belgium, up 0.6% and Canada, up 3.9%, but French markets, which account for three quarters of the total volume, drank 3.4% less. Champagne : Jacquart résiste à la crise
